Initially Rheinberger composed the Salve Regina WoO 54,2 around 1880 in a version for choir a cappella SSA, but on 22 December 1881 he added an organ accompaniment. This version was in the repertoire of the Royal Choral Capella in Munich and was performed many times under Rheinberger's direction. The composer envisaged a performance with a choir, however a version with solos would also be possible and thus this heartfelt, harmonically charming piece has been recorded on CD.
