Sometime in 2013, I took out one of my favorite CDs of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and listened to it from beginning to end. Although I have listened to this many times in the past, it was just at this time that I realized that if The Rite of Spring was rescored as a choral work, it could have been as effective as the original orchestral score. I thought the human voice is as capable as an orchestra in producing the earthyness, rawness, and primeval atmosphere that Stravinsky might have had in mind. Some friends and colleagues had doubts about it as it might be too challenging to perform but the idea could not escape my mind. I believe any enthusiastic choir will find it to be performable.
Here it is, my transcriptions of Stravinsky’s great work, the final dance - Sacrificial Dance (Danse Sacrale) from The Rite of Spring.
The “syllables” and “words” are invented and do not have any particular meaning. It is done with the intention of simulating a primitive language . Rhythmic articulations and accentuations of the text are dictated by Stravinsky’s music rhythms. A pronunciation guide is supplied using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA.)
