This is known as the first piece Turlough Carolan composed. The titletranslates into either Little Fairy and Big Fairy or LittleFairy Hill and Big Fairy Hill. Nearly the same melody is found inthe 1810 Collection of Ancient Irish Airs (O’Neill, Bunting, andMulholland) under the name The Bonny Cuckoo (Roud 24351).It is in the key of D. You can hear the fairies lightly flutteringaround. Their colorful Baroque conversation moves between parts or in parallel. At times their conversation is (‘fairy’) emphatic! The piece ends with theWizard turning the fairies into hills. The melody is divided evenly betweenparts. Dynamics are clearly marked
