Though only a minor pendant to the great Cello Concerto, Antonin Dvorak's Rondo Op. 94 is an effective and entertaining piece that belongs in the standard repertoire of every cellist. Dvorak composed it in December 1891 shortly before leaving for America, and he gave the work its premiere performance on 3 January 1892 with his friend, the cellist Hanus Wihan, during his farewell concert tour. To produce this urtext edition Milan Pospisil consulted the autograph score and first edition not only for the piano version, but also for the orchestral version of October 1893.

    Difficulty Level:
  • March 28, 2011 Dvorak, Rondo for Violoncello and Piano (Henle)

A charming piece of moderate difficulty. As usual, Henle provides a clear, readable, attractive urtext edition. There is only one awkward page turn, and that one is probably unavoidable. John Michel's popular cello repertoire syllabus puts the Rondo at level 10 on a 12 point scale of difficulty, roughly...

comparable to the Bruch Kol Nidre or the Saint-Saens a minor concerto.. Playing time is about six to seven minutes depending on tempo..
