Piano - SMP Level 10 (Advanced)
Composed by Maurice Ravel (1875-1937). Edited by Maurice Hinson. Masterworks; Piano Solo; Solo; Solo Small Ensembles. Alfred Masterwork Edition. Impressionistic; Masterwork. 16 pages. Alfred Music #00-6328. Published by Alfred Music (AP.6328).

Item Number: AP.6328

English.

Dedicated to Gabriel Faure, Ravel prefaces this piece of liquid poetry with a line by Henri de Regnier: The river god laughs at the water as it tickles him. Ravel indicated that he wanted the work played in the way you play Liszt, and the technique required to play it hearkens to Franz Liszt, but the sonorities and transparency are definitely impressionistic. Polytonality, rippling arpeggios, tremolos, trills, double notes, major seconds, sevenths, ninths and other high-numbered chords are featured.

About SMP Level 10 (Advanced)

  • April 22, 2021 The best of Ravel

This is simply Ravel at his best. Very difficult, so it will be a long-term project for me. The note spacing is nice and the music is very legible, not too small. Excellent.

  • May 13, 2020 well worth the money

The readability and paper quality are good, and the fingering is also useful. There are some misprints though; at bars 35, 69 and 71. Notice that the 8va applies to both note lines at bars 67-69 and 72. All in all a good edition of a beautiful piece for...

a reasonable price. For technically adept players only.

Heard it on NPR. Arrangement is great but to hard for my wife, who I bought it for. Definitely level 10!

This is one of the masterpieces of French Impressionism. Have a solid technique before approaching this piece or you will never be able to play the last few pages in tempo. Sophisticated piece.
