Steinberg (S0.112721).Pulcinella is a ballet by Igor Stravinsky completed in 1920. It is based on an 18th-century play form of theatre that uses improvised performances based on sketches or scenarios performed by actors in masks. The music is unusual for Stravinsky in that it is heavily adapted from classical works by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi and updated by Stravinsky with more modern themes and rhythms. The ballet has only one single act and features Pulcinella, his girlfriend and his friends in a comedy of love, jealousy and eventually marriage. The ballet itself lasts only 35 minutes. Presented here, arranged for Concert Band, is the eighth and final movement of an eight movement suite Stravinsky adapted from his ballet. The movements starts with a grand theme which is then followed by a triumphant and fast finish sure to please any audience.
