Early in his career, Pavel Chesnokov (1877-1944), with the thirty settings in his Opus 9, made an enormous contribution to the realm of repertoire for women's voices. His setting of the Sunday Communion Hymn "Hvalite Ghospoda s nebes" (Praise the Lord from the Heavens) is a spirited and brilliantly scored choral miniature, which will musically reward any children's or women's choir that undertakes to perform it; the brevity of the text -- one psalm verse, followed by "Alleluia" -- presents a minimal challenge.
