Polly Oliver easily ranks in my top five concert band pieces for middle or high school symphonic band. Being a lead alto and tenor sax player, I may be a bit biased because of the extensive sax parts given (I've played both parts in concert), but I can say...

that Polly Oliver sounds amazing with fun-to-play parts for each instrument. Listneing to the recording from my middle school honor band DVD gives me chills at least five times during the song. Polly Oliver starts out slow, beautiful, and haunting. The band comes in with a fragment of the melody before a clarinet solo. The melody is repeated up to measure 43, where the tempo switches to Allegretto with a high trumpet line and flute/clarinet/oboe runs. The original melody comes back at measure 92 for a stunning conclusion. I would recommend this piece to any and every middle school and high school band that is serious about playing.
