This Piano Sonata in C mjor, one of eight sonatas in this key, is one of Haydn's best-known piano pieces , and one of the first encountered by budding pianists in their lessons. In 1780 it opened a cycle of six sonatas for the pianistically proficient Auenbrugger sisters. The first movement – with 170 measures is quite long for Haydn's standards – is followed by a relatively simple Adagio and a whimsical finale which, with its theme in 3/4 time and the trio-like c-minor middle section, evokes a minuet.

I am an "Early Advanced" adult piano student who loves the classical piano repertoire. My teacher recommended this piece because it will give me practice in developing the technical skills that I still have trouble with at times. I love Haydn and this is the first full Haydn Sonata that...

I have tried to master on the piano. I love the breezy lively texture and sound of this sonata and it is fun to play. Also enjoy the Henle editions (also recommended) by this teacher, because of the clear easy to read layout of the music and the fingering suggestions that conserve energy for the pianist.
