    Difficulty Level:

If I've a student who's 12 and up, I would usually start them on this book instead of the Preliminary Book in this series. Alternatively I have started them on the Preliminary Book to cover the basic skills then, once reaching halfway, interspersed pieces from Book One. this...

has worked well and older students regard the earlier book then just as prep-work for making the pieces in Book One easier and quicker to accomplish (rather than them having to begin at a much younger level). Book One pieces are then learnt much quicker than having begun at this level and having no previous experience playing the piano. I've also had older students transferring from previous teachers but having no skills at being able to read music. I explain to them how they are far better to have selected pieces from Preliminary Book interspersed with this Book One to make their whole learning process easy as possible. It has worked extremely well and progress much quicker than beginning at only Book One level.

I use all 4 books of the series. The only supplemental materials I use I have designed myself.

  • May 02, 2011 Alternative to Thompson

This course is a good alternative to the Thompson red course. One difference is that fewer of the pieces have words. A second is that there are fewer finger numbers. The series does not develop keys as rapidly as Thompson. A nice feature is that there are not huge gaps...

in the progression. The student does not encounter a roadblock in going from book 1 to book 2. Plan on spending up to two years in each book to teach the course right. There is a lot of material crunched into a small space.

Fabulous series, very thorough. Teaches Middle C method and provides techniques. Highly recommended. Kids enjoy songs as well.

I have taught from this primer for over 30 years. I particularly like that they do NOT provide all the finger numbers. I find it just the right speed of progression for children. I've even used it for adults with success. I was pleased that Sheet Music Plus still...

    had it.
