Un canto di Natale, la cui melodia trova le sue origini probabilmente nell'XI secolo, e il cui testo si trova in un paio di varianti ("Intonent hodie voces ecclesiae", inno a S.Nicola di Russia, e "Personent hodie voces puerula", più tardo, ritrovato tra le Piae Cantiones raccolte in Finlandia a fine '500 da un chierico luterano svedese Jaakko Suomalainen. La voce principale è stata riproposta in versione corale o con arrangiamenti per vari strumenti in epoche recenti tra gli altri da Holst e Rutter. Qui si propone la versione di Jerome Epstein.
Ecco il testo in traduzione italiana:
Che risuonino oggi le voci dei bambini / con la lode gioiosa a colui che è nato per noi, / datoci da Dio onnipotente, sia gloria a Dio nel piu' alto dei cieli (altra versione: concepito dal grembo della vergine.)
E' nato al mondo, avvolto in povere fasce / posto in una mangiatoia in una stalla per animali / il signore dei cieli, rovina del principe degli inferi.
Vennero tre magi, portando doni / cercavano il bambino, seguendo una stella / per adorarlo e offrirgi oro, incenso e mirra.
Che tutti i preti cantino con i bambini / cantino come gli angeli: "Sei venuto al mondo / Ti lodo, sia gloria a Dio nel piu' alto dei cieli!"
Da notare alcune ripetizioni ritmiche nel testo latino, tipo "Ideo-o-o, gloria in excelsis Deo" o "perdidit-dit-dit spolia princeps infernorum" che probabilmente, almeno nella versione per S.Nicola, accompagnavano il movimento di tre bambini che portavano le offerte, come i re magi, in dono al bambino.
A Christmas carol, with music probably based on an 11th century melody and text from the late 16th century (but there's a different, older text, dedicated to St.Nicholas from Russia: "Intonent hodie voces ecclesiae"). This melody has been arranged in various versions, among others by Holst and Rutter, while we transcribed here the version by Jerome Epstein for a capella SATB choir.
