Im Jahr 1922 beginnt Hindemith, sich verstärkt mit alter Musik zu beschäftigen und entdeckt das Instrument Viola d’amore. Er komponiert eine Sonate und ein Konzert für Viola d’amore und schreibt zahlreiche Werke von Biber, Ariosti, Pezold, Rust, Vivaldi sowie Stamitz ab und fertigt zu den bestehenden Bassstimmen eigene Generalbassaussetzungen an.
