This Overture in C, composed by one of Gossec's outstanding pupils Catel, is a most representative original band composition of the French Revolution era. It was premiered by the National Guard Band at the Paris 'Theatre Feydeau' on november 29, 1793. The concert was meant as a demonstration of the high musical qualities of the newly created National Music Institute.
