They can be played in any combination – as duet or trio, as quartet, or as string orchestra. The two "lead violin" parts use all four fingers (although they can be played using open strings instead of fourth finger), the "fingered violin" part uses first and second fingers, and the open-string part is for beginners who have not yet learned fingering.
