Composed by John Hughes / William Chatterton Dix. Arranged by Garrett Breeze. Christmas,Sacred,Spiritual. Octavo. 8 pages. Lagom Music #6118543. Published by Lagom Music (A0.723352).

This arrangement puts a new and exciting twist on the well known carol "Once in Royal David’s City" by setting it to the tune of "Cwm Rhondda" (known most commonly as the tune for "Guide Us, O Thou Great Jehovah" and "God of Grace and God of Glory"). This majesty and power of this new setting, combined with composer Garrett Breeze’s stirring arrangement bring new life and energy to the beloved Christmas hymn. Accompanied by piano, the arrangement begins with the men and women separately, then continues to add harmony and build in intensity to a climatic final verse.

Lyrics:

Once in royal David's city stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed.

And, through all his wondrous childhood, He would honor and obey, love, and watch the lowly maiden in whose gentle arms He lay; Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. Jesus Christ her little Child.

For He is our childhood's pattern; day by day like us He grew; He was little, weak and helpless, tears and smiles like us He knew; And He feeleth for our sadness. And He shareth in our gladness. And He shareth in our gladness.

And our eyes at last shall see Him through His own redeeming love; Not in that poor lonely stable, but in heaven up above; Set at God's right hand on high; When like stars His children crowned. When like stars His children crowned! When like stars His children crowned!
