Satie'sOgivesund Gymnopediesare milestones in the history of modern music. The four metrically freeOgives(meaning pointed arches) reflect the influence of the French New Gothic or Neo-Gregorian movement in architecture with their clear lines and echo effects. The threeGymnopediesproceed with a swaying, chordal momentum, and Satie's radically sparse writing makes ironic reference to the dance of young warriors in ancient Sparta during gymnopaedia rituals.

The pieces are easy to play and are ideal for teaching purposes. Information on performance practice by Satie specialist Steffen Schleiermacher offer insight into Satie's music aesthetics.

  • February 23, 2021 Great simple pieces published beautifully

Barenreiter Urtext editions are usually impeccable and this one is no exception. The pieces themselves are very simple, able to be sight-read by even the young amateur. However, they are still beautiful and moving and make for great pieces to give to the young student wanting to learn to...

love music. Satie is incredible, and so is Barenreiter.
