There is confusion as to who is the exact composer of this melody. Perhapsit was an anonymous Cistercian Monk, or King John IV of Portugal (1604-1656),or John Reading (1645-1692) or John Francis Wade (1711-1786). The firstpublished version of it was in 1751 by John Francis Wade, a Scottish scholar ofplainchant so he is often given credit as its composer.

This arrangement has three verses of increasing difficulty; each usingharmonics in the quiet sections. The dynamics are clearly marked. The melody isdivided evenly between parts. The easier Trio version can be played along withthis duet version to give 5 parts.
