The rich but simple harmonies are truly beautiful in this unmatched version of the Lord's Prayer. It's a must have for every choral library. A true gem!

  • July 26, 2006 Exquisite harmony

Maurice Durufle's French language setting of the Our Father is sung regularly in France in its original form for unison voices and organ. (L'Eglise de Saint Eustache, Paris, being but one example.) In my experience it is not sung often enough in Catholic worship, at least in the...

British Isles. Perhaps this is because there is no English language version for unison voices & organ to suit the congregational style of musical worship in most Catholic parish churches. A pity, because in whatever version, this piece is as masterly as anything we may encounter in Durufle's oeuvre, with its lyricism, attention to verbal accents and exquisite harmony.
