This production of John Neumeier's Death in Venice is part of Arthaus Musik's Elegance Series, which is a collection of ballet performances from the world's best dance houses featuring the greatest choreographers and celebrating the legacy of legendary choreographer Marius Petipa. This ballet is freely adapted from Thomas Mann's Novella of the same name. The choreography walks a fine line between theatricality and melodrama, and between brilliant movement passages and banal gestures. The message of the work is that the life of an artist can be torturous unless he is in creative touch with his inner emotions. As a special bonus in this release, "Another Liebestod- Der andere Liebestod," a film by Norbert Beilharz, is also included, as well as an interview with John Neumeier and rehearsal footage.
