"The recorder pieces in Myth Music were originally written for my fifth grade students, but are appropriate for beginning and intermediate players of any age. Every spring, the 5th grade put on a Greco-Roman Festival, the culmination of their studies of ancient times and mythology. Myth Music became a staple of the festival, along with dancing and a Greek luncheon enjoyed after the performances.
The two- and three-part selections in Myth Music range in difficulty: Baucis and Philemon (easy), Pyramus and Thisbe, King Midas, Echo and Narcissus, (more challenging), Pandora's Box, The Adventures of Perseus (most challenging). The piano accompaniment adds color and support to the recorder parts. A recording of both the full work and play-along tracks is available on CD or by digital download. It is, of course, possible to enjoy these pieces without any piano accompaniment.
At the beginning of each song there is a brief synopsis of the myth, followed by a question. There is not necessarily a right or wrong answer to any of these questions. The purpose is to encourage you to explore the music and discover some of the compositional choices that help to communicate defferent aspects of the myth.
One of the nicest outcomes of this experience was seeing how much the students enjoyed the music. They were thrilled by the intricate weaving of the rounds, loved creating the blocks of three-part harmony, and were excited by the bits of dissonance. When I walked into the first day of 6th grade music and heard many of my students playing their Myth Music songs from the previous year and asking to learn more of them, I felt like the project had been a real success.
