The work's title, Music of Memory, refers to the long-term memory of a golden age (and the corresponding hope that it can continue to nourish our own art) represented by the Mendelssohn; the short-term 'memory' of an original that lies behind the variation form; and the use of the different kinds of memory-related techniques and materials during the work - 'guitar sounds' typical of the instrument and its repertoire, and the 'memory recalls' of the coda.

Maw's Music of Memory is quite possibly the greatest piece of solo guitar work of all time. That is quite a statement, I know. The sheet music itself is perfect; extremely explicit, but very complicated. For a piece of this magnitude, one cannot be surprised. I purchased this sheet...

music out of respect and curiosity. My gut feeling was correct; this piece is well beyond the Advanced level. To play properly, this is a virtuoso masterpiece. Period. Highly recommended to Advanced guitarists for an extreme challenge, and potential composers who want to witness Contemporary Solo Guitar writing at its finest.
