    When I was a younger man, I had the opportunity to study with the great Cuban musician, Alberto Socarrás. Maestro Socarrás was a succesful bandleader during the 1930's,and is considered by many to be the father of Latin Jazz. He also recorded the first flute solo...

    in Jazz record history. Socarrás explained to me that in Cuba, Solfeggio was taught to children before they started learning an instrument, By the time they started to manipulate an instrument, they would not be intimidated by reading music. This is something we should do in the U.S. The Eslava method was the book from which he taught; always reiterating to his students that Solfeggio was the key to musical progress. Socarrás swore by this book.It's for beginner to advanced intermediate level and takes a good bit of time to get through. I'm glad to see that it is still in print.
