Le merle noir (1951) was originally written as a test piece for the Paris Consevatory. The song of the blackbird opens the piece, accompanied by sustained low notes on the piano. Then follows a slow passage before the birdsong re-enters. The piece concludes with a complex section for flute...

and piano. The flute plays quick staccato semiquavers, embellished by grace-notes, as the piano plays a rhythmically complex (heavily syncopated) serial passage, which generates a marvellous mystical colour. I highly recommend Le merle noir to players of Diploma standard or higher.
