Both Michael Row the Boat Ashore and There is a Balm in Gileadare Afro-American Spirituals. Charles Pickard Ware wrote down Michael Rowthe Boat Ashore after listening to slaves sing it as they worked on theplantations or rowed across water. The words ask Archangel Michael for help. Thereis a Balm in Gilead comes from both the Old and New Testaments.
Unitarian Minister, George Willis Cooke wrote a song in the later 1800’sthat has become a campfire mainstay. I chose to list it as Down in My Heart. It’s also known as I’ve Got the Joy, I’ve Got that Joy, Joy, Joyand Joy, Joy, Joy.Dynamics are clearly marked.
