  • December 05, 2011 good practice drills, but little fun to play

I bought grade 2 after taking my first steps with other resources and some private lessons (not using Mel Bay). The exercises are like very good drills, and playing at full speed requires serious practice. However, most of the exercises (including the 'songs') are not really fun to play. This...

book is focusing on technique (and speed), but you'll have to add some other pieces to develop your total musical competence. One additional comment about the expanded version with CD. I really don't like the sound of that guitar, and what's worse, it has a terrible fret buzz! The exercises are also played very fast (too fast, if you ask me), and the player has an occasional mishit once in a while. Doesn't sound professional at all.

I give Grade 2 five stars. It takes you out of the "novice" group and puts you into the "Beginning Intermediate" group. It includes eight note studies, introduces you to sixteenth notes, and gives you an introduction to position playing. It introduces the keys of F and D. The sixteenth...

note studies are rather difficult when someone first tries them, however, so an easier introduction to 16th notes would be nicer for beginners. The last guitar solo, "Carcassi's Waltz" challenges even an intermediate player.

This book may be good for beginners as well as those who know a little bit. Great method for self-teaching.

This book is a really good tool to learning about music. It teaches you things like triplets and plectrum techniques that a lot of artist use today. It is a big jump from book one though once you get to around page 8, but that just goes to show you...

that the Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method series is so more advanced than the other music books and you would be a fool not to go with this series is you want to get the right start. Book 2 in this series is the equivalence to,like, book 5 in other books. You'll see that by the time that you make it to the end. Good Book!
