Dvorak's Mass in D major came into existence as a result of a request for a composition that would be played on the occasion of the festive consecration of the palace chapel in Luzany, the seat of an architect and a benefactor Josef Hlavka. Despite this fact, the Mass is intended for provincial choirs. The joyful piece, revealing Dvorak's intimate knowledge of the church music played in the Czech countryside, is written for solo voices, mixed choir and organ. This critical edition presents the original version of the piece.
