Mary's Little Lamb is a story piece for wind quintet. The composition offers a departure for exploring emotion in music by establishing five distinct moods that parallel the action of the story. Concepts such as major and minor keys, tempo, rhythmic patterns, dynamics, and other elements may be brought into a pre or post performance discussion depending on the age level and desire for addressing technical matters. The piece may be performed with the oboist as narrator or with a narrator from outside the ensemble.
