Mark Lowry and Buddy Greene have created what has quickly become a contemporary, Christmas classic. Recorded by popular artists from Clay Aiken to Pentatonix, this compelling song remains at the top of the charts around the world.
In this cello/piano duet, I’ve tried to capture that mysterious contemplation the lyricists have so successfully communicated. Of course, the cello’s timbre quite effectively creates the mood, but also the piano’s gentle, rhythmic accompaniment keeps the forward motion going and adds to the "lullaby" quality of the piece. Both instruments are given their turn at the melody, and each must "sing" the words to help the arrangement communicate to the audience. Without any hesitation, boldly play that final phrase and satisfying chord at the end, where the lyricist concludes, "This sleeping Child You’re holding / Is the great I AM."
