Portraits 2 is one of a kind. Despite MacPartland's long association wih jazz, this music is not really jazz, or at least not pure and simple. And, some ten days in from receipt, I am still unsure whether any of it will become part of my core repertoire, whether...

for private enjoyment or wider performance. The transciprtion is scrupulous and inventive, and demands attention of the same sort. There are few fixed time signatures, for example. Most though I think not all of the original performances are available online at NPR Piano Jazz, and I think listening to them is all but essential in the process of achieving a worthwhile performance of your own. But I'm vey glad I bought it, and may well look back at the earlier set at some stage.
