The movements alternate in mood between introspective and playful. A common thread throughout the piece is a lyric section in whole or part of each movement. The first movement was conceived as an ‘aria’ for the oboe. At times the melody is shared by the other instruments in the ensemble. The second movement is more of a showpiece to display the technical prowess of the oboist. In the third movement, I intended to create music which is more atmospheric and coloristic in nature, while in the final movement, a playful scherzo concludes with a bit of bravura on the part of the oboist. Lyric Passages was composed in 2010 and premiered in 2011 at an IDRS conference at Arizona State University.
