La colonna sonora de Il Signore degli Anelli, composta, orchestrata e diretta da Howard Shore, è solo uno degli altissimi risultati artistici conseguiti da parte di Peter Jackson & Co. nel corso della realizzazione della trasposizione cinematografica della trilogia di J.R.R. Tolkien. Il mondo della Terra di Mezzo si è ulteriormente diramato e anche sulla splendida colonna sonora sono stati scritti saggi e volumi, e ancora oggi Howard Shore tiene dei concerti sinfonici in tutto il mondo. La realizzazione della musica ha richiesto un lavoro costante e attento: Shore è stato spesso presente sul set (ha fatto anche un cameo), ha partecipato attivamente al missaggio e al montaggio con Peter Jackson («È come dirigere la performance di un attore», ha dichiarato il regista), paragonando il suo complicato “viaggio musicale” a quello di Frodo. Il compositore si è reso subito conto che avrebbe dovuto lavorare come per un’opera musicale, in cui ogni film rappresentava un Atto, con strutture più larghe e coese.
