Mahler's first song cycle, this work was composed at the end of his relationship with soprano Johanna Richter.  Written in four movements, this work is yet another example of Mahler's mastery of orchestral writing.  Reorchestrated by French composer Serge Ollive, the original work's feel has been maintained while becoming accessible for smaller orchestras.
