By Lee Evans and Martha Baker

By Lee Evans

By Lee Evans and Martha Baker. Evans Piano Education. 24 pages. Published by Hal Leonard (HL.9072).

Item Number: HL.9072

ISBN 9780793597192. 9x12 inches.

The authors strongly believe that to achieve comprehensive musicianship more effectively and rapidly, all piano students should know how to notate music...and should therefore be given writing assignments at every lesson. A creative approach to the learning of writing skills will involve pupils in the activity of composing. This volume introduces fundamental compositional techniques - repetition, sequence, retrograde, and inversion - to the early level student.

    Cincinnati, OH
    Difficulty Level:
  • August 14, 2008 short, not for young beginner

For the money, this isn't a very lengthy book. It throws out terminology in a rather abrupt fashion, so it is difficult for a young beginner interested in composing to grasp without guidance. Students need to be able to read the staff, rhythms up to 8ths, intervals... perhaps more...

for a mid-level to late beginner. For my older students it works relatively well, though they are eager to move beyond this. For my younger students they enjoy the idea of composing, but conforming to any structure doesn't hold their interest. Still, it encourages creativity and it's a decent alternative to presenting motive, repetition, sequence, retrograde and inversion compared to what's in a few methods for those wanting more. It's also a nice start toward understanding improvisation and jazz (though Jazz From Scratch or Lee Evans other jazz education books would be more suitable). Additional staff paper would be recommended.
