Piano - Advanced
Composed by Maurice Ravel (1875-1937). Edited by Nancy Bricard. Masterworks; Piano Collection. Alfred Masterwork Edition. Impressionistic; Masterwork. Book. 64 pages. Published by Alfred Music (AP.16807).

Item Number: AP.16807

ISBN 0739063812.

This major 20th-century Neoclassical work is Ravel's last work for piano solo. A tombeau is a lament, and each of the six movements is intended as a musical epitaph to friends lost in the war. The difficulty found here, especially in the "Toccata," is understood when one learns that Ravel studied Liszt's transcendental etudes in preparations for writing the suite. The meticulously researched stylistic information and clear, accurate text of this performing edition will prove to be invaluable to the advanced pianist.

This is the best available edition of this piece, and given the degree of difficulty , with so many sharps thrown in that the music at times looks like a spool of barbed wire, clarity is all-important. Fortunately, the text is generously laid-out and extremely legible, with useful fingering...

suggestions and occasionally Ravel's own stylistic commands. The introduction is full and informative.

If you are considering learning (or relearning) Ravel's great masterwork, you can't do better than this scholarly and practical edition. The editor, Nancy Bricard, is a pianist and teacher who specializes in the French repertoire, and this shows in her careful and resourceful fingerings and pedallings. She offers...

some minor rewriting for small hands, and many redistributions of the hands. (Players may want to go even further, especially in the Toccata.) The music is beautifully laid out on the page, and the proof-reading has been done scrupulously. (This isn't true for all Alfred editions in this series; the Schumann Carnaval is almost unusable because of the numerous errors.) There are pages of introductory material that place Ravel in the context of his time. Each of the six movements of the Tombeau is introduced, and its technical and musical challenges discussed.

I played the toccata a long time ago and I'm still working on it. It's great and horribly difficult.

Marvelous background information on the piece and on Ravel. The fingerings are for the most part great and help with the phrasing and musicality. Some fingerings a little odd and while they make some passages more easily played, they change the musical idea.

The edition here presents excellent musicological research---which can help in interpretation. The music is clear, but is rather small in size.
