Composed in 1893 while he was director of the National Conservatory of Music of America in New York City, Dvorak's New World Symphony has been an enduring favorite of audiences everywhere ever since. As its most famous theme, this plaintive, slow-paced excerpt emulating African-American spirituals must be played with good breath support/control and phrasing. Duration 2:15.

    I nearly didn't buy this music, as it was marked easy, and the quintet I play in is capable of quite challenging pieces. But that would have been a real mistake. This arrangement is easy to play, but sounds so gorgeous that it's still very enjoyable. For us...

    it's a good piece to warm up with. I think it would also be an excellent arrangement for teaching, as tuning is so important for slow-moving chromatically complex music such as this. It really encourages the players to listen to one another.
