Daughter of immigrants and supporter of refugees, Emma Lazarus wrote "The New Colossus" as part of a 1883 fundraising campaign for the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. In this choral setting, her words reverberate through cascading melodies and chordal fanfares. March and folksong, fervor and gentleness alternate in vigorous rhythmic variety as Lazarus' sonnet depicts the power and compassion evoked by the statue in her time. Lady Liberty's Request remains a relevant theme to share with audiences on campuses, concert halls, and other communal spaces in our time. (2016)
