King Chanticleer is a Broadway-style ragtime piece composed in 1910, first as a song and later as a piano solo. It is still a staple of many ragtime and stride pianists. This arrangement for recorder ensemble (with optional harpsichord) remains faithful to the beauty and vitality of the original while adding a few surprises. Note the soft-shoe section, the quote from the Dies Irae and the surprise ending. If needed, the instrumentation may be moved up beginning with sopranino recorders. The harpsichord part adds no new material but just adds harmonic support to the recorders. This arrangement was commissioned by Kathleen Arends for The Big Byrds recorder ensemble in Seattle. The duration is 3'50.
