Piano - SMP Level 9 (Advanced)
Miscellaneous Suites and Pieces. First Part. Composed by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). Edited by Terence Best. This edition: urtext edition. Paperback. Barenreiter Urtext. Performance score, anthology. Baerenreiter Verlag #BA04222. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag (BA.BA04222).

Item Number: BA.BA04222

ISBN 9790006446223. 31 x 24.3 cm inches.

The compositions in this volume cover a wide span of Handel’s creative life, from his Hamburg years until about 1750; but most of them were written before 1720, the date when he seems virtually to have given up composing for the harpsichord except for special commissions such as the two Suites for the Princess Louisa (nos 6 and 7, c. 1739). There are Autograph MSS of all but eight pieces (2–5, 19–22), supplemented in some cases by contemporary copies, and twelve of them appeared in contemporary printed editions; nos 9–12, 15 and 16 are here printed for the first time.

  • January 16, 2018 Get a handle on Handel

I am very satisfied with my edition of Handel’s little known fugues and keyboard sonatas. Especially the first six or so fugues, which are very compatible to playing manualiter on the organ. My edition is sewn and not stapled and is the same excellent quality of any other Barenreiter...

book. If you’re a Handel fan this book will not disappoint.

  • June 21, 2009 Great Music, Quality Book

The copy of this book I received is sewn, not stapled. I have books purchased from this publisher in the mid 1980's that are still bound. The biggest difference I can tell is the price. $12.00 then! The music in this book is excellent. I like the fact there...

are several individual single movement pieces. It gives you an opportunity to play a single movement composition without someone questing you if you're going to play the whole suite! A two manual harpsichord is best for most of these compositions. The range is from CCC to ccc. Of you're playing on a single manual harpsichord, 8 x 8 with buff stops would be ideal. As a true Urtext edition, fingering is not supposed to be there. Use a pencil. You may need to make some changes as you continue your studies. Enjoy music, enjoy life.

  • March 08, 2008 Great music. Poor quality book.

I just received the book a couple of weeks ago and the pages are already starting to fall out of the book. They are stapled (not sewn) into the book. Unfortunately, I was unable to find the specific suites anywhere else. Furthermore, the reference numbers of the works (i.e...

., HWV ...) are not at the top of the page of each suite, only at the front of the book. I'm also not too sure about the accuracy of the naming of each suite movement. There are no fingering suggestions. Perhaps you can find a higher quality copy of these works somewhere else.
