Joseph’s Song begins with a male solo in which Joseph tells of his betrayal and fear that Mary would bring him shame. It then brings in Soprano and Alto to join the Bass, still in the first person, as Joseph regrets that the life he built with rugged hands...

is just a broken dream. The mood changes as Joseph reports the angel’s visit and now his rugged hands can hold God’s child as he learns to love him as his own. From the cantata “Comfort and Joy” the setting is for SAB or SATB and optional orchestra score and performance/accompaniment are available separately. As the name implies, this piece tells the Christmas story from Joseph’s perspective. Although it is directed to be sung tenderly with variations from mp to mf, it brings a male view-point to balance the traditional focus on Mary. As such it could be used at times other than Christmas as a challenge to renewed faith.
