Albéniz' piano music is truly irresistible, in particular because of its dance-like elements and its Spanish atmosphere. Asturias combines these elements in a most sophisticated manner. It first appeared in 1892 as the Prélude to the Chants d'Espagne (HL 51480782), and again in 1901, this time with the title Asturias in the Suite Espagnole (HL 51480783), and the pieces soon became one of the composer's best-loved works. Who isn't familiar with the mysterious guitar sounds that conjure up a Flamenco scene in Andalusia? The piece has often been arranged, but we are publishing it in the original Urtext version for solo piano – in an affordable single edition.

This edition is perfect in just about every way; the foreword, sheet music and music itself are of pristine quality. The fingerings are a major plus as the hand-crossings can be quite difficult with poor fingerings. The first thing I noticed about this edition was the lengthy foreword that...

takes up about six pages or so. It contains information about the composer, the edition itself and the five individual pieces. The sheet music itself is tidy and accurate and does not seem to contain any mistakes. The edition includes fingerings, which I found very helpful. The only bad thing about the sheet music is the modern, slightly ugly layout with the unattractive looking pedal markings underneath each row. That, however is just a cosmetic issue and does not affect the quality of the product. 5/5, would recommend.
