The book is intermediate with a few difficult passages. This is a fun book. I can't believe it didn't have "Epistrophy"!

  • September 29, 2000 Play Like Monk!

This is a great book to get started in Monk's Music. If you are a pianist who hasn't discovered Monk, do yourself a favor and get his solo works on Columbia. Or my favorite is Monk playing Duke Ellington on Fantasy. However, in this book, its all Monk...

's music. The arrnagements stand on their own and can be played just as they are and sound good. They are on the sparse side but sound very complete. All the chords are there so you can imporvise as well. I especially liked Ruby My Dear and 'Round Midnight. Be sure to get a Monk album to see how they should sound. The notation is only half the story.
