Composed by Alexander Borodin. Arranged by Adrian Dee. Romantic Period. 34 pages. Adrian Dee #4368834. Published by Adrian Dee (A0.817938).

We are on the vast grasslands in Central Asia. In the distance we hear a caravan approaching. They are guided by Russian soldiers singing a folk song. As they get closer, we hear a melancholy native melody also emerge. The caravan passes, the voices of the men, the plodding of the horses and camels, the bundles of goods on their way to a foreign market. All intermingled into one song now. We watch them slowly fade into the distance until all we can discern is a faint rise of dust on the horizon and the fading notes of the folk song.

"In the Steppes of Central Asia" was first performed in April 1880 in St. Petersburg. It has been a favorite of mine since childhood and I am pleased to be able to bring it into the flute choir repertoire. Includes whistle tones, otherwise the piece is quite accessible, not difficult.  Appropriate for high school, college, community, and professional ensembles.

Total play time: 6:14.  Total pages to download: 34.
