Englishpoet Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) wrote "In the Bleak Midwinter"in response to a request for a Christmas poem by the Americanmagazine Scribner’sMonthly in1872. It was published posthumously in her PoeticWorksin1904 and became a popular Christmas carol after its inclusion in TheEnglish Hymnal(1906)in a setting with music by Gustav Holst.

Thetune was given the name "CRANHAM" after the village in Gloucestershirethat was home to Holst’s grandparents and mother, and where it issaid (though no definitive proof exists) that he wrote the music.

Thisarrangement displays the rich sonority of the TTBB choir, employingat times as few as one and as many as all four voices andincorporating both traditional and contemporary harmonies.
