This arrangement brings to the fore a text of singular importance, 1 Corinthians 14:15. St. Paul exhorts us to sing with feeling, with spirit, but also with understanding, with the mind. The translation says, "I will sing with the spirit, but also with the understanding." However, no one today...

would say "with the understanding." So, for my choir, I used white-out and eliminated the definite article before the word, "understanding." In accord with the teaching of this very Scripture verse, we should think about what we are singing, not just make sounds; we should use our minds. Hence, we don't want to sing "with the understanding." That sounds as though we just gof off the boat and are practicing English. By my lights, there is no excuse for the congregation or the choir to sing words that are obviously not right. Like Rutter's other works, this setting is attractive and inspiring. His musicianship should be matched by English texts without error or malapropisms.

    A John Rutter junkie
    Difficulty Level:
  • 2006-03-27 00:00:00.0 Best Rutter piece - EVER!

During the elementary school tour by a middle school, I will never forget the moment when the choir sang, "I will sing with the spirit...alleluia!" When I dowloaded the mp3 of the same piece, it took me right-smack in the middle of memory lane. This is absolutely pure...

John Rutter at its peak of magic. It would make you sing with the understanding also, as it suggests. I would put this on my list of choral favorites (alongside "For the Beauty of the Earth," of course)!
