The notion of the hypersuite owes its genesis to an historical anomaly. Between 1721 and the early 20th century, no important concert pieces were written for a solo cellist. 1721, of course, marks the Cello Suites of Bach. The newer compositions on this album (six in all, as there are six suites) recognize the god-like influence of the Bach Cello Suites over all subsequent solo cello music. Bach becomes the narrator as the program alternates his music with works of the 20th century.
