Hungarian Dance No. 5 is one of the most famous pieces of classical music ever written. Brahms arranged over 20 Hungarian dances, but this one is by far the most familiar to students and audiences. With its dramatic tempo changes and exciting switches from minor to major, this music grabs your attention and holds it from start to finish.
This is one of Brahms most familiar compositions and will be instantly recognized by the audience. Of primary importance, is the observance of the many changes in tempo and dynamics. For example, m. 13 is marked p and should be dramatic in contrast to the f dynamic of the opening statement. The poco rit. in mm. 41 through 44 should also be in sharp contrast to the opening tempo. The same is true for mm. 55 through 62 where the tempo and dynamics vary every two measures. Careful attention to these points will result in a successful performance.
