The repertoire of sacred music for marimba solo has been sparse; it is hoped that this work will be enjoyed by marimbaists who wish to play sacred music. Based on the traditional Swedish melody that has been set to the words "How Great Thou Art" by Carl Boberg (1859–1940) and then Stuart K. Hine (1899–1989), it is one of the favorites of all hymns. Much of its acceptance was gained through its position as the "signature song" of the 1950s Billy Graham Crusades.
It is appropriate for an advanced player - there are plenty of independent mallet passages - and would serve equally well in a college percussion recital or a church service. In church this work would be appropriate as special music or as an offertory.
The arrangement requires 4 mallets, which are best graduated in hardness to elicit the roundest, best-balanced sound possible and to clarify the melody. Traditional double lateral rolls are indicated by slashes though the stems, and independent mallet rolls by an ellipse through the note stem. Duration is 5:31.
