Composed by Traditional American folk tune. Arranged by Nigel Williams. Concert,Folk,Holiday,Sacred. Score. 8 pages. Nigel Williams #2081809. Published by Nigel Williams (A0.763234).

Composed initially as the end movement of a cantata for congregation, choir, organ and trumpet commissioned by First Baptist Church, Kalamazoo and premiered on their new 54 stop Letourneau organ in 1998, this arrangement for solo organ was revised and expanded by the composer in 2009. (It was this revision of How Firm A Foundation that encouraged Professor Marilyn Mason to commission me to complete a new piece for volume 7 of the Marilyn Mason Music Library, published 2010). In this arrangement of How Firm A Foundation, the gentle first variation enables the organist to showcase either the Great 8' principal or flute stop in an accompanying role. The second variation is in the style of a baroque trio and requires a balanced registration, while the third and final variation is a fine toccata in the French style with the melody in the pedal. Playable on a two manual and pedal organ but well suited to a larger instrument, this fine arrangement will please both performer and audience. (Performance time approx. eight minutes, full score is eight pages).
