In this work, Fanny Hensel's surpreme mastery of composition is even more evident than in 'Lobgesang'. She employs the wide-ranging potential of the orchestra with confidence. In terms of harmony, she often goes far beyond what we are familiar with from her brother Felix, who was himself a very keen experimenter. What makes one sit up and take notice is the unerring feel for spoken language with which the composer sets the words to music. This is very evident in the opening section sung by the choir, where the question 'What is man?' is posed for the second time. In the melodic modification and the resulting changes in harmonic structure, the yearning for an answer to this question is absolutely palpable.
