On the occasion of Mauricio Kagel's 70th birthday, WERGO publishes two early works by Kagel on CD, which had already been released on two LPs, in 1968: "Heterophonie" for orchestra with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Frankfurt conducted by Michael Gielen and "Improvisation ajoutee" for organ, scilfully played by Gerd Zacher. Kagel sets conditions in his "Heterophonie" score, establishes borders, or opens spaces in which the sound of the performance is each time newly created. In "Improvisation ajoutee" the voices of the participants (Gerd Zacher playing the organ and two composers assisting at the stops: Juan Allende-Blin and Yngve Jan Trede) create a new dimension for the piece: the singing, speaking, whistling, and shouting, as well as clapping, cut across the sound of the organ and extend it into areas beyond that which is purely instrumental. Mauricio Kagel, born in Buenos Aires on 24 December 1931, is among the most distinctive composers of contemporary music. Imagination, originality and humour are the hallmarks of this multimedia artist.
